Renewable Energy Systems

Published: May 2, 2016 - Updated: June 22, 2016

Overview

Bushlight is an innovative renewable energy project which aims to increase access to sustainable energy services within Indigenous communities of Central and Northern Australia. These communities are isolated by hundreds of kilometres of dirt roads, can be cut off by flood, and have no access to town water, power and other utilities.

Solution

SAGE constructs the control panels for these renewable energy systems which convert and store solar energy.

The Bushlight innovation, invention and infrastructure has resulted in an average saving of $4,000 per year per community on energy costs in over 120 communities.

Result

In Australia, there are over 1000 remote Indigenous communities, many of which are not connected to electrical grids or gas pipelines. Bushlight’s vision is ‘Improving livelihood choices for Indigenous people, through access to sustainable renewable energy services’.

Since 2003, SAGE has constructed more than 200 Bushlight units.
