Craigieburn Train Maintenance Facility

Published: May 11, 2016 - Updated: July 14, 2023

The Victorian Department of Transport in conjunction with Metro Trains, developed a project schedule to expand the Craigieburn Train Maintenance facility (CTMF) to provide increased frequency and reliability of Melbourne’s trains.

SAGE was appointed to provide the Safety System which included 3 inspection roads, 1 lifting road, 65 keys with 12 exchange panels as well as interfacing with overhead wiring, mezzanine platforms, door control, monorail crane control, bridge crane control, under floor lifting systems and bogie turntables.

SAGE also developed an OMS SCADA with live display of facility equipment, work order data logging and tracking as well as alarm and event logging.

The design of the castellated Key (Fortress) interlock system was based on the operation requirements and isolation procedures of the individual roads which provides interlocking of the overhead wire system with the train lift systems, rotating turntables, cranes and roof access platforms.

Project Highlights

  • First facility of its kind to be able to have each road isolated into three sections of enerergised overhead wiring.
  • Unique system with key exchanges, electrically linked to interfacing equipment such as cranes for easier access.
  • The project was the first Operational Management System of it’s kind in Victoria
  • Integrated safety and standard IO allows for a very flexible system and saved on hardware costs.
  • SAGE added value as a bridge between consultants and contractors and delivered the project within tight timeframes, meeting high level documentation requirements.
