Providing preventative and reactive maintenance for Sydney Airport for over a decade, and more recently 24/7 remote support via the National Operations Centre (NOC), SAGE Automation has a thorough understanding of the client’s existing critical infrastructure systems and wider airport complexities.
SAGE was engaged to integrate a wide range of assets across 3 terminals (T1, T2 and T3), including high voltage system, pump stations, aerobridges, car parks, lifts, escalators, energy meters, distribution boards, pollution gates, critical UPS units and lighting into one Airport Management System (AMS), a scalable digital solution with the capacity to connect additional assets in the future as required.
In bringing all the processes, machines, and people across the airport into a singular system, the AMS’s primary goal is to maximise situational awareness across the organisation through improved data-driven capabilities for decision-makers.
The system also enables deidentified vehicle and pedestrian monitoring throughout the car park and T1 to unlock complete situational awareness across the facility to drive value through data-driven decision-making.
AMS Program of works highlights include:
- End-to-end design and cabinet manufacture
- Including Motor Control Centres (MCC), high voltage switchboards and distribution boards with uninterruptable power supply (UPS)
- PLC programming
- Integrating SYD assets into standardised PLC hardware and software
- SCADA upgrade
- A large system with a total of 45,000+ tags and over 400 PLCs
- Wiring and electrical drawing improvements
- Enhancements to data visualisation
- Key vitals – including runtime, power usage, and battery life – for machinery used across the entire airport are now visible for enhanced predictive maintenance
- High voltage monitoring capabilities
- Situational awareness
- Assets geolocation
- Mobile SCADA views
- Vector Graphics
- Reports and dashboards
- 24-hour support of the airport’s operation is available through SAGE’s National Operations Centre (NOC)
- An agile project scope allows the client to expand the AMS as needed, including the recent development of an integrated database by SAGE Automation IT specialists.
In recent years, the SAGE Automation team at Sydney Airport has grown to 15 people comprising electrical engineers, automation technicians, and project managers. The success of the AMS works and ongoing development, together with existing service level agreements has led to SAGE being a trusted partner for Sydney Airport across all three terminals.
This relationship has seen two additional SAGE Group companies, Skills Lab and Embedded Expertise, being utilised by Sydney Airport to continue advancing its digital journey. Skills Lab provides electrical and automation upskilling to airport staff, aiding a smooth digital transition to their new systems, while Embedded Expertise supports the placement of high-calibre technical experts in specialised roles within the airport where required.
