A local regional council planned a large IoT project which will deliver region-wide coverage of a LoRaWAN network to foster an entrepreneurial ecosystem in the region. The flexible solution will include a smart dashboard to provide insight into uptake and usage.

Industry

Smart Cities

Outcome

This flexible solution provides low-power, wide-area network connectivity in support of M2M and IoT applications. It can support thousands of LoRaWAN –certified end node. Together with the smart dashboard, the solution will deliver region-wide coverage of a LoRaWAN network to foster an entrepreneurial ecosystem.

Capability

LoRaWan, wide area radio networks, 4G LTE, IoT

Region

South Australia, Australia

Project background

The District Council of Loxton Waikerie has planned a large IoT project which will deliver region-wide coverage of a LoRaWAN network to foster an entrepreneurial ecosystem in the region and encourage adoption of eg-tech opportunities. The project has been funded by the Australian Government under the Murray-Darling Basin Economic Development Program.

The first stage of the project saw the installation of five gateways. Further stages of the project will involve connecting sensors to the network for wide-ranging use cases by councils, community and the agriculture industry

Project outcome

Configuration and installation of IoT gateway solution

This flexible solution provides low-power, wide-area network connectivity in support of M2M and IoT applications. It can support thousands of LoRaWAN –certified end node.

Dashboard

The overview dashboard provides detailed insight into gateway performance and use. The dashboard provides the following statistics:

  • Number of uplink packets received over time
  • Number of downlink packets sent over time
  • GPS measured location
  • Configured frequency plan.

The dashboard also displays the following information:

  • A map-based representation of the gateway location
  • A chart of uplink and downlink packets for each device.

The LoRa outdoor gateway is capable of resisting environmental challenges such as moisture, dust, wind, rain, snow and extreme heat.

Project capabilities

  • All gateways connected to the Things Network
  • Bench test of all hardware completed
  • Configuration of 4G coverage
  • Signal strength heat map of the surrounding area
  • Installation diagrams and drawings
  • Maintenance plan documentation.
